Sangüesa Region

Where the river was a path and a boundary

List Map

Here, the River Aragón does not simply flow through the land, but sustains it. Its course has been a border and a bridge, a mirror and a path. All around, the stone stands with the serenity of one who has watched centuries, kingdoms and pilgrims pass by without altering its rhythm. The Sangüesa Region is a land of quiet vigilance. The gorges hold long silences, the fields breathe to the rhythm of the seasons, and the architecture emerges as if it had always belonged to the landscape.

The Sangüesa region reveals itself in the humble flavour of pochas, in the traces of pastoral life, in the patient engineering that tames the water... It is all part of a continuity that needs no explanation. You simply have to walk it.

What to see in the Sangüesa region?

The region reveals its secrets like a codex opened to the attentive traveller.

  • Javier Castle: A 10th-century fortress and the birthplace of Saint Francis Xavier, patron saint of Navarre. Its structure reflects its evolution from a watchtower to a stately palace, and it is the destination of the popular annual pilgrimage known as the Javierada.
  • Leyre Monastery: Situated at the foot of the mountain range of the same name, this national monument served as the burial place of the kings of Navarre. Its 11th-century crypt and the Porta Speciosa showcase the solidity and intricate detail of Romanesque art in the valley.
  • Foz de Lumbier: A narrow gorge carved out by the erosion of the River Irati over millions of years. The route through it follows the old track of the Irati railway, Spain’s first electric train, passing through tunnels dug directly into the rock.
  • Santa Criz de Eslava: An archaeological site that preserves traces of the Roman presence in the region, offering a glimpse into the history of the landscape of Eastern Central Navarre.
