Javier

Where the hill watches over and memory takes root

Beneath the watchful gaze of Castellar Hill, where the silhouette of the castle cuts against the sky with the patience of centuries, Javier breathes in a history woven from journeys and ashlars. Here, stone is not merely a material: it is a witness.

In the Sangüesa region , the old name of Etxeberri (new house) does not refer to fleeting novelty, but to the perpetual act of starting afresh. The current town layout, designed in the 1960s, made room for pilgrims and their faith, shifting the heart of the village from the feudal esplanade to a more welcoming plain. Between the undulating terrain of the valley and the gentle flow of the River Arco, the memory of Saint Francis Xavier coexists with the tranquil life of a community of barely over a hundred inhabitants.

Javier general information

In the east of the Autonomous Community of Navarre, Javier lies within a transitional landscape. Around a hundred inhabitants now sustain the life of the municipality, which has been situated since 1964 in a town centre relocated from the immediate shelter of the fortress.

The town was the birthplace of St Francis Xavier in 1506, and this origin still permeates its identity. What was once a small border fiefdom is now a major gathering place during the Javieradas, when thousands of pilgrims converge on this enclave. Amidst the religious and civil heritage, the village retains the imprint of a border territory, where history has left its mark in the form of surveillance, transit and devotion.

What to see in Javier?

Javier’s heritage is a dialogue between defence and mysticism, between modern engineering and medieval echoes.

  • Javier Castle: This fortress, whose history dates back to the 10th century, houses a museum dedicated to the life of its most illustrious resident across its three floors. Its stone walls and geostrategic position reflect the military importance it held in guarding the passes to the Kingdom of Aragon.
  • Basilica of Javier: A building adjoining the castle that forms part of the monumental complex, serving as the spiritual centre that welcomes thousands of pilgrims every March.
  • Parish Church and Abbey of the Annunciation: Founded in 1500 by the saint’s parents, Juan de Jaso and María de Azpilicueta. Its structure reflects the transition from religious to monastic use, having served as the headquarters of the Oblates of Christ the Priest for four decades.
  • Sculpture of Saint Francis Xavier: A work by the sculptor Faustino Aizkorbe, situated in the Plaza del Santo, opposite the town hall. This piece of contemporary art blends into the understated character of the current urban layout.
  • 50th Anniversary Exhibition: The route between the village and the castle is marked by letters and elements documenting the relocation of the village in 1964, allowing visitors to observe the town’s evolution from its former feudal site.
