Yesa

The mountain that prays over the water

Yesa nestles beneath the sheer slopes of the Sierra de Leyre, as if the mountain had decided to watch over its destiny. The monastery’s ancient stonework engages with the expanse of the reservoir, where the River Aragón widens and rests. In this land of passage, history flows whilst the cloisters maintain a profound silence and the wind sweeps across the blue expanse that transforms the valley into a mirror. The silhouette of Arangoiti watches over from above, and the ancient bridges remind us that all passage leaves its mark. Yesa thus sits on a natural border where monastic heritage and daily life find balance in the mineral solidity of the Pre-Pyrenees .

Yesa general information

The municipality of Yesa belongs to the region of Sangüesa and is situated 47.8 kilometres from Pamplona. Yesa (Esa in Basque) builds its identity around the water that gives it its name. The Yesa Reservoir, one of the largest in the Ebro Basin, has reshaped the landscape and the local economy, whilst the old town coexists with the hydraulic infrastructure, and the municipality stands as a strategic enclave in Eastern Central Navarre, where water management is also the management of memory and territory.

What to see in Yesa?

Yesa offers a serene experience where nature, architecture and water converge.

  • Monastery of San Salvador de Leyre: It is recognised as one of the most important Romanesque buildings in Navarre and one of the oldest monasteries in the north of the Iberian Peninsula. Its stone walls guard the crypt and the spiritual heart of the mountain range, and the Order of Saint Benedict continues to operate there today.
  • Yesa Reservoir and water sports: The vast expanse of dammed water reflects the technical harnessing of the River Aragón. Its surroundings offer opportunities for fishing and water sports.
  • Puente de los Roncaleses: Ruins of a 12th-century stone structure that preserves Roman remains at the base of its abutments. Its presence over the River Aragón bears witness to the legendary battle of the Reconquista and the historical importance of communications in the valley.
  • Sierra de Leyre and Arangoiti: The ridge reaches 1,356 metres at the peak of Arangoiti. It is the setting where one can watch those who practise paragliding and hang-gliding, integrating the grandeur of the landscape into the municipality’s sporting activities.
  • Old Church of San Esteban: Located in the old town, this ashlar-built structure stands as a testament to the town’s traditional religious architecture, standing alongside the new parish church situated next to the thoroughfare.
  • San Virila Fountain: Thirty minutes from the monastery, the remains of this fountain preserve the legend of the abbot who slept for three centuries after hearing the song of a nightingale, reflecting the mysticism that permeates our surroundings.
