Ergoiena
The highest land amidst the mountain ranges
The highest land amidst the mountain ranges
At the point where the mountain seems to rise not only in height but also in memory, Ergoiena stretches out like a territory suspended between the Urbasa, Aralar and Andía mountain ranges. In Ergoiena, it seems as though the land has learnt to look down from on high. The valley is revealed in the stillness of the beech forests that envelop the course of the Leziza and in the constant presence of a landscape that dominates the Barranca corridor. It is not a place for hurried passage, but a place where nature dictates its own rhythm, slow and mineral.
Ergoiena, ‘the highest land’, preserves in its scattered layout the traces of ancient shepherds, solitary huts and hamlets that have learnt to coexist with the altitude. In this coexistence between the human and the geological, the landscape remains in balance, like a way of life adapted to the summit.
Ergoiena is a valley and municipality situated at an average altitude of 608 metres in the Merindad de Pamplona, within the region of the Sakana. Its territory is divided into two distinct areas: the main valley to the south of the Barranca and the enclave of Monte Abajo to the north. Its name comes from the Basque language and accurately describes its geographical condition: “the highest land”. This definition is not symbolic, but literal in its relation to the surrounding terrain.
The valley’s administrative independence dates back to 1504, when it was separated from the former territory of Etxarri-Aranatz under the reign of Catherine and John III. Today, Ergoiena belongs to the Basque-speaking area of Navarre, where the Basque language remains part of daily life in its three villages: Lizarraga, Dorrao and Unanu.
In Ergoiena, every feature of the landscape reflects the logic of altitude and natural heritage.
