Bakaiku
The town that preserves its rhythms and traditions
The town that preserves its rhythms and traditions
In this corner where the River Arakil winds its way between the rugged Urbasa and the sweeping Aralar, stone and wood coexist in a harmony that is evident in every aspect of the landscape. The town is reflected in the tranquillity of its communal forests, which guard the valley’s history, and in the daily life that keeps the rhythms of work and collective celebration alive.
Bakaiku is a land of observation and roots, where time is felt in the pulse of the square and the river’s course, allowing the identity of the Sakana community to emerge unhurriedly, through the interplay of nature, community and tradition.
Bakaiku is situated in the north-west of Navarre, within the district of Pamplona and the Sakana region. Its municipal area, covering 11.7 km², occupies the western edge of the Burunda Valley, between the villages of Iturmendi and Etxarri Aranatz. The village has developed over the course of its history in a transitional setting where the River Arakil forms the valley floor.
The inhabitants of Bakaiku maintain the character of a small community, with strong ties to the land and the natural resources of its mountains. Daily life revolves around forestry, caring for the river and the celebrations that mark the annual calendar.
Bakaiku’s heritage illustrates the relationship between the valley, the forest and musical traditions.
