Orbaizeta

Where the forest envelops the memory of fire

Where the Pyrenees open out towards the border and the forest grows denser, history comes to life. In Orbaizeta, the stone holds the memory of fire, of burning furnaces and constant rebuilding, whilst the River Irati continues its course, oblivious to the passing of the centuries. The atmosphere is evident in the arches that stand firm on the façades and in the silent presence of an industrial past that today fades away amidst the grass and mist. It is a land where strength and tranquillity coexist, where every ruin and every tree is part of the same story.

Orbaizeta general information

Orbaizeta is the northernmost municipality and one of the largest in the Aezkoa Valley , situated at an altitude of 765 metres. Its territory, covering more than 80 km², is defined by a continuous forest that connects it directly to the Irati Forest , one of Europe’s great forests. The identity of the place has been shaped by its border location and by the presence of the Royal Arms Factory, whose activity transformed the landscape and the rhythm of life for centuries. Amidst conflicts, fires and reconstruction, the village has maintained a constant relationship with its natural surroundings, combining livestock farming traditions with forestry. Today, with 186 inhabitants, Orbaizeta remains a landmark in the valley: a place where life unfolds at a leisurely pace, amidst the forest, the river and the memories.
