Abaurrepea / Abaurrea Baja

Where time stands still and the stone remembers

Here, nestled in the gentle valley, the place opens up like a refuge where stone and time recognise each other without needing to be named. In Abaurrea Baja (or Abaurrepea), the atmosphere is revealed in that ancient stillness that seems to have paused amongst the houses, as if every wall preserved the echo of what has been lived. It is a place where the memory of its origins and the daily life of its few inhabitants coexist in serene harmony, allowing the days to pass with the slowness of what is essential.

Abaurrea Baja general information

Abaurrea Baja lies at the heart of the Aezkoa Valley ( ), at an altitude ranging from 855 to 871 metres, in a place where the terrain becomes gentler and the climate is milder than in the nearby higher ground. Abaurrepea retains its status as the valley’s cradle, recognised as the oldest settlement from which others emerged, including Abaurrea Alta . The history of the place has been marked by episodes of destruction and rebirth, as if fire and reconstruction were part of its very nature. Spanning an area of 11 square kilometres, life here has revolved around timber, pasture and farming, and although the population is small today, the village retains its essence intact.

What to see in Abaurrea Baja?

Abaurrea Baja unfolds as a narrative where stone, history and landscape intertwine.

  • Church of San Martín de Tours: A 14th-century Gothic church whose tower barely rises above the surrounding landscape, reflecting a humility that permeates the entire complex. Inside, the stonework houses a late Romanesque altarpiece and a 16th-century grille separating the altar, a feature unique to the valley.
  • Renaissance cross: Situated at the entrance to the village, this 16th-century monument bears witness to the vicissitudes of 19th-century warfare in its ‘truncated’ structure.
  • Errotaldea Mill: Set in a beautiful spot, it is a remnant of the traditional industry that harnessed the power of water.
  • House of the Inquisition: Ruins of an ancient building shrouded in local legends and mysteries.
  • Asketaldea Cave: A natural site close to the town centre that can be reached by following the local footpath.
