Aniz

The little gem overlooking Abartan

Here, the scale of the Baztan Valley alle de Baztan is measured in the details. Situated between Ziga and Berroeta, it is the smallest village in the Baztan-Bidasoa region, but its size is precisely what gives it an almost secret charm. On the western slope of Mount Abartan, time seems to have stood still to preserve a way of life that respects the land and its traditions. Aniz is a peaceful haven, where the green of the meadows and the stone of the houses tell a story of shepherds and farmers who have known how to live in harmony with the peaks that surround them.

Aniz general information

With fewer than 100 inhabitants, Aniz proudly holds the title of being the smallest village in Baztan-Bidasoa, though its character is immense: it is a community that has managed to preserve its identity over the centuries, maintaining a well-kept village centre where every corner exudes authenticity.

Here, life unfolds beneath the gaze of venerable mountains that have, since time immemorial, dictated the rhythm of the harvests and the grazing of livestock. Aniz is the ultimate expression of Baztan hospitality, for here life goes on without paying heed to those who arrive. One need only look slowly to understand it.

What to see in Aniz?

Aniz is a stroll through the symbolism and tranquillity of an unspoilt rural setting.

  • The Disc-shaped Stelae: As you climb the stone steps leading to the church, you will come across a unique collection of distinctive stelae. These funerary monuments, carved from sandstone, offer a glimpse into the intimate lives of our ancestors. In their bas-reliefs, you can make out crosses, spirals and the mysterious Seal of Solomon.
  • Church of Our Lady of the Assumption: The parish church, dedicated to the Assumption, is a building which, despite being more recent than others in the valley, blends perfectly with the village’s traditional architecture. It stands at the highest point of the village and offers a place of contemplation and silence, surrounded by the endless greenery that characterises the slopes of Aniz.
  • The surroundings of Mount Abartan: For those who love the hiking and direct contact with the mountains, Aniz is the ideal starting point for exploring the foothills of Abartan. The trails leading from the village offer panoramic views of breathtaking beauty, allowing you to understand why livestock farming has been, and continues to be, the pillar that sustains this vibrant landscape.
