Berroeta

A haven of calm beneath the gaze of the mountain

Here you will find a haven of absolute peace and tranquillity. Berroeta lies at the foot of Mount Belate and is one of the southernmost villages in the region. It stands as a sentinel, bidding farewell to the valley and welcoming those who cross the natural border of the region Baztan-Bidasoa

In this place, the surroundings seem to embrace the hamlet, offering a landscape of intense greens with a history that is not only found in books (such as the life of our brigadier and mayor Martín Luis Echeverría) but can also be felt in the stones that our ancestors left scattered across the mountains.

Berroeta general information

This is one of the smallest and most authentic communities in Baztan-Bidasoa. Its privileged location, near the historic Belate Pass, has shaped the character of this welcoming and peaceful village, making it the perfect place to escape the noise and connect with the purest essence of the Navarran Pyrenees.

Despite its size, Berroeta possesses a wealth of history spanning millennia. From the mysterious megalithic monuments dotting its hills to the well-maintained façades of its houses, here lies a living testament to humanity’s adaptation to the mountains. Strolling through these streets is to enjoy a beautiful setting where the residents’ dedication to preserving the beauty of the place is evident in every detail, in every flowerpot and in every carved stone.

What to see in Berroeta?

Berroeta is a must-visit destination for lovers of prehistory and traditional crafts.

  • The megaliths of Berroeta: The mountains guard secrets from the Iron Age. In the surrounding area, a magical route allows you to discover dolmens such as that of Soate, burial mounds such as that of Sorota, and cromlechs that form circles of stone in the grass. Special mention must be made of the Urdintz menhir, a large vertical slab whose ancient significance continues to defy the passage of time.
  • The Iriartea House coat of arms: At the entrance to the village, an impressive piece of stonework welcomes visitors. This work, carved by local craftsman José Lorenzo Rementegui, is a fine example of the mastery with which stone is worked in Baztan.
  • Church of Saint Martin of Tours: The parish church is a building of refined architecture and harmonious proportions that dominates village life. Dedicated to Saint Martin, its sober exterior reflects the character of Berroeta: simple, robust and welcoming. It is the meeting place where the most deeply-rooted traditions are celebrated.
  • Surroundings of Belate: Beyond the town centre, the paths climbing towards the Belate Pass offer some of the best hiking routes in the area. It is a place where nature makes its presence felt with great force, amidst ancient beech forests and the cool mountain air, marking the southern boundary where Baztan begins to draw to a close.
