Erratzu

The murmur of the water and the cradle of the Bidasoa

In the shade of the beech forests and the hills of north-eastern Baztan, Erratzu lies at the source of the river that will later flow through Navarre under the name of the Bidasoa. The hamlet lies surrounded by mountains where nature manifests itself in stone and woodland, weaving neighbourhoods such as Iñarbil and Gorostapolo into a tapestry of stately architecture and watercourses that define the untamed character of our land. Here, water dictates the rhythm of daily life.

Erratzu general information

This town is a testament to resilience and beauty, having rebuilt itself following the great flood of 1913, which marked a turning point in its appearance. Living here means living with the constant sound of water and a respect for centuries-old traditions and culture. From its unique carnivals to its historical role as a border and customs area, the village has managed to maintain a perfect balance between rural life and an architectural heritage of great elegance.

What to see in Erratzu?

Erratzu offers one of the most iconic nature trails in Navarre, alongside buildings steeped in history.

  • Xorroxin Waterfall: The source of the River Baztan emerges as a four-metre drop surrounded by a forest of beech, oak and chestnut trees. The stream is home to the traces of legends about the lamias, whose stories form part of the mysticism of this setting without the need for further explanation. A path starting from the village centre allows you to see how the water winds its way through the landscape towards the valley’s head.
  • Church of San Pedro: This 18th-century parish church stands as a testament to the community’s resilience. Rebuilt after being split in two by the 1913 flood, it retains a bell tower and an octagonal apse whose structure suggests influences from ancient architectural orders. Its cloister, built in the local vernacular style, offers a space of tranquillity that reflects the town’s robust character.
  • Birthplace of the Gastón de Iriarte family (Old Customs House): This palace was rebuilt in the 18th century and bears a strong resemblance to the family’s house in Irurita. With its two characteristic towers, it not only demonstrates the economic power of the Gastón de Iriarte family, but also serves as a reminder of Erratzu’s strategic importance as a customs checkpoint in the past.
  • The neighbourhoods of Iñarbil and Gorostapolo: Wandering through these neighbourhoods is to discover the essence of the Baztan hamlet. Gorostapolo, in particular, serves as a gateway to the Xorroxin route and offers a picturesque view of houses clinging to the hillside and views of the surrounding mountains.
