Araitz Valley
Where the stone remembers and the mountain breathes
Here, where the mountain seems to lean in to listen to its own echo and the Malloas cut across the sky like a suspended stone frontier, time does not move forward: it settles. The River Araxes does not simply flow through the valley; it narrates it. Between Navarre and Gipuzkoa, its course writes a story that never stops, whilst the meadows maintain their calm with the same natural ease with which the mist chooses to linger.
In the Araitz Valley, the farmhouses bearing coats of arms are not architecture: they are settled memory. And beneath the limestone surface of Aralar, the legends do not rest; they simply wait to be heard. It is a place of passage and of borders, where the murmur of underground waters and the footprints of ancient shepherds coexist in a mineral harmony that needs no explanation. Here, identity is not constructed: it is revealed.
Araitz Valley general information
It is located in the north-west of Navarre, in the natural corridor between the region and Gipuzkoa. Its landscape, covering 38.86 km², is defined by the Malloas, limestone ridges that dominate the horizon, and the Araitz-Ultzama syncline, which shapes its relief.
Its history has been shaped by its status as an ancient frontier during the Middle Ages, in times of conflict between kingdoms. Its Jurassic geology is home to chasms, caves and marine fossils, whilst the oceanic climate favours beech forests at higher altitudes and oak forests in lower-lying areas. Economic and cultural activity remains linked to sheep farming and the artisanal production of Latxa sheep’s cheese.
