The hill where the path leaves its echo

The hill where the path leaves its echo

The land rises gently to form a hill that opens up a view of the Alduides mountains. Bizkarreta-Gerendiain sits upon this undulating terrain, where the landscape stretches uninterrupted between meadows and forests. The very name of the place refers to this hilly landscape, a territory shaped by time and traversed for centuries by those crossing the Pyrenees. Before Roncesvalles became the focal point for the flow of pilgrims, this enclave served as a refuge and resting place, a halfway point where travellers could pause and then continue on their way. The presence of the Church of San Pedro and the silence of the surrounding slopes create a serene atmosphere. Here, history lives on in the details, in the paths, in the continuity of a landscape that invites you to explore it at a leisurely pace.

Bizkarreta-Gerendiain general information

Bizkarreta-Gerendiain is a parish in the Erro Valley, located some 34 kilometres from Pamplona. Its territory, covering approximately 17 km², is characterised by a gentle yet strategically important terrain within the Pyrenean mountain range. Since the Middle Ages, the town has formed part of a royal domain, with records of tax payments to the crown dating back to the 13th century. Its position on the Way of St James profoundly shaped its development, turning it into a place of transit, hospitality and cultural exchange. The history of the place is also linked to episodes of conflict, such as the Battle of Bizkarreta in 1794, during the war against revolutionary France, an event that left its mark on the collective memory. Today, the municipality preserves significant elements of its past, such as the armoury captain’s palace and a traditional economy based on forestry and livestock farming.
