Paths that follow the train’s trail
Here, where old stations and tunnels still bear witness to the passage of the train, Navarre’s greenways offer a peaceful way to explore forests, rivers and valleys. The old railway lines have left the clamour of industry behind to become accessible paths that invite you to walk, cycle and discover the landscape at a leisurely pace.
Amidst Atlantic mountains, gorges carved into the rock and long corridors of trees, these routes preserve the memory of iron and coal whilst nature slowly reclaims its space. Each route has its own character: the lush greenery of the Bidasoa, the Plazaola tunnels or the rock faces of the old route of the Irati .
Why visit the Greenways of Navarre?
The Greenways allow you to explore Navarre at a leisurely and accessible pace, following paths with very little gradient and away from traffic. Rather than demanding sporting routes, these are itineraries designed to enjoy the landscape, pass through small villages and discover old railway features that still remain along the way: stations, metal bridges, viaducts or century-old tunnels.
The Plazaola Greenway passes through forests and tunnels carved into the mountainside, including the Uitzi tunnel, one of the longest of its kind in Europe. The Bidasoa Greenway follows the course of the river through Atlantic countryside, whilst the Irati Nature Trail follows the old timber railway alongside the Foz de Lumbier. Travelling these routes also offers a chance to explore the industrial and forestry history of Navarre from a peaceful perspective, deeply connected to the natural surroundings.
