Foz de Lumbier

Foz of Lumbier

A gorge open to the sky

In the Foz de Lumbier, the Irati River has carved its way through the rock for centuries, whilst birds of prey have found refuge in the heights. The constant murmur of the water echoes through the gorge, whilst the steep walls define a landscape that exists somewhere between the mineral and the living. In this space, nothing demands attention explicitly; it is the combination of rock and vegetation that shapes the landscape step by step.

Foz de Lumbier general information

Located in the pre-Pyrenean valleys of eastern Navarre, some 40 kilometres from Pamplona, the Foz de Lumbier is one of the area’s most iconic natural sites. It is a gorge carved out by the River Irati, protected as a Nature Reserve since 1987.

This area stands out for its importance as a habitat for birds of prey, which find the rocky walls an ideal environment for nesting. Added to this is the presence of old infrastructure, such as the railway line, which today allows visitors to explore the area in an accessible and environmentally friendly way.

How to get to the Foz de Lumbier?

Getting to the Foz de Lumbier is easy. From Pamplona (about 40 km away), head towards the town of Lumbier and follow the signs along the NA-150 road to the entrance. The journey offers some very attractive pre-Pyrenean landscapes.

Next to the entrance there is a car park with toilets, a picnic area and information; during the high season there is a charge.

What to do at the Foz de Lumbier?

  • Birdwatching: It is one of the best spots in Navarre for spotting griffon vultures, as well as Egyptian vultures, peregrine falcons and, occasionally, bearded vultures.
  • See the Devil’s Bridge: Along the route, you can see the remains of this old bridge, linked to local history.
  • Doing a circular route: There is a trail of around 6.4 km with an elevation gain that runs along the top of the gorge.
