Esnotz

The tranquillity of the hamlet and the echo of the forest

List Map

Under the serene presence of Mount Mendi and the jagged outline of Liran Rock, the landscape opens up into a calm that seems suspended. Stone and silence coexist in an ancient balance, where time stands still. In Esnoz (or Esnotz), life is evident in the intimate layout of its houses, clustered around the church, and in the almost invisible traces of ancient hermitages that the mountain has gradually embraced. It is a place where history does not impose itself, but simply remains. Amidst beech and oak woods, the memory of the old palaces and the rhythm of the mountains blend into a tranquil continuity, made of matter, silence and permanence.

Esnoz general information

Esnoz is a parish in the Erro Valley ( ), situated on a plain at an altitude of 850 metres. Its history dates back to the Middle Ages, when, as early as the 13th century, it appeared as a royal town, contributing taxes to the crown. The traditional organisation of the village was based on a system of shifts among the houses, reflecting a deeply rooted community structure. According to the 2025 census, Esnoz has a population of approximately 32 inhabitants, retaining its character as a small mountain hamlet. Life here passes quietly, in harmony with a woodland environment that defines both the landscape and the way of life.

What to see in Esnoz?

The village offers a leisurely exploration of its architecture and surroundings.

  • Church of San Martín de Tours: A stone building from the early 17th century (late Gothic) that dominates the hamlet. Inside, the Neoclassical altarpiece houses a Baroque carving of Saint Martin sharing his cloak with a poor man, a trace of folk art that has survived the centuries.
  • Architecture: The village consists of large two-storey houses with gabled roofs, many of them bearing 19th-century inscriptions and featuring pointed or semicircular arched doorways with ashlar voussoirs.
  • Hidden chapel: An old chapel lies hidden amongst the village houses. This is the Chapel of San Paul, a unique witness to the long history of this settlement and the only one remaining of four chapels that once stood within the parish.
  • Natural surroundings: The landscape is dominated by the Landabarri and Larrabia hills, where beech and oak forests define the woodland atmosphere surrounding the municipality.
