Araitz
Where the meadow holds time
Where the meadow holds time
Here, beneath the sheer cliffs of the Malloak that etch a mineral chronology onto the landscape, the substance of the stone and the green of the meadow coexist in a stillness that simply is. In Araitz, ‘the village beneath the Malloak’, the atmosphere is felt in the murmur of the clustered farmhouses and in the trace of a language, Basque, which inhabits the streets with a natural vitality. It is a land of observation and endurance, where the mysticism of the Aralar peaks and the daily life of the villages blend into a landscape to be discovered at a leisurely pace. The heritage of the place is evident in the texture of the walls, in the scent of freshly cut grass and in the unhurried rhythm of those who still live in tune with the land.
This town is a municipality in Navarre situated in the valley of the same name, in the border area with Gipuzkoa and on the route of the old road that linked Pamplona and San Sebastián. Araitz’s identity is shaped by a landscape defined by the Aralar mountain range to the west (which forms the boundary with Sakana) and the borders with Areso to the north, Gorriti to the east and Betelu to the south-east. It is a community deeply rooted in its culture, where the Basque language is central to daily life and where the management of resources such as water and the Anitzes services reflects the continuity of a mountain way of life.
Araitz offers a journey where stone, meadows and the memories of its people intertwine along every path and in every farmhouse.
