Gartzain
The valley of lineages and grand farmhouses
The valley of lineages and grand farmhouses
Gartzain is a setting where the stone speaks of nobility and hard work. Strolling through this corner of Baztan-Bidasoa is to discover a showcase of the valley’s finest traditional architecture, where large farmhouses stand alongside palaces of the ‘cabo de armería’ style, characterised by their imposing simplicity. Here, history is spread across picturesque neighbourhoods such as Ariztegui and Aitzano, places where time seems to have stood still to preserve the essence of a village that was the birthplace of illustrious figures. Gartzain is the perfect blend of the strength of the rural world and the elegance of the ancient noble estates that brought fame to this land.
Gartzain is characterised by the spectacular nature of its buildings. Here, it is not difficult to distinguish the character of each dwelling: sturdy farmhouses and the oldest palaces in the valley which, despite their importance, retain the unpretentious aesthetic of the Baztan-style farmhouse.
This identity is linked to neighbourhoods that are little treasures. In Aitzano, the spirit of the old noble estates lives on, whilst in Ariztegui community life revolves around traditional spaces that invite relaxation and well-being. Living here means being part of a landscape dotted with barns and green meadows.
Gartzain invites you to take a leisurely stroll through its neighbourhoods to admire its religious and civil heritage.
Cabo de Armería Iturbidea Palace (Aitzano neighbourhood): This estate is one of the first Cabo de Armería palaces in Baztan and the birthplace of historical figures such as the Iturbides. Its structure, similar to that of a traditional farmhouse, reflects a rural nobility that favours external simplicity over ornate display, preserving centuries of lineage within its stonework.
Church of Saint Martin of Tours: Our parish church, one of the oldest in the valley, houses a chestnut wood choir with reliefs dedicated to Saint Martin. It is a space where silence envelops the devotion of generations of Gartzaindarrak, woven into the architecture of the church.
Ariztegui neighbourhood (chapel and washhouse): In this neighbourhood stand the Chapel of El Pilar and the old washhouse, surrounded by spectacular, well-maintained houses. Water and places of worship have historically been the pillars of a community that inhabits these houses with respect for the heritage they have inherited.
Spectacular Farmhouses: The area features large-scale buildings that reflect the prosperity linked to the land. As you walk along its paths, you can see the stonework on doors and windows, as well as the wooden balconies that define the style of the Baztan farmhouse and the deep-rootedness of its inhabitants.
