The Baroque elegance of Baztan
The Baroque elegance of Baztan
Blending into a single tapestry of rooftops and streets, Elbete and Elizondo appear as a single settlement when viewed from above. However, upon crossing its boundaries, a distinct identity emerges, shaped by centuries of governance and a palatial architecture evident in the stonework of its walls. Here, the Baroque coexists with the green of the meadows in a setting that has historically been a meeting point for the valley’s decision-makers and a place of residence for the intelligentsia. Among its stately homes and bridges, Elbete offers a stroll through the most refined of the Baztan-Bidasoa.
Elbete is a strategic and stately enclave in the heart of the valley. Despite its proximity to the administrative centre of Baztan, it has managed to preserve its traditions, standing out for its exceptionally well-maintained town centre, which invites visitors to take a leisurely stroll.
The history of Elbete is inscribed on the lintels of its palaces. For centuries, Elbete was the setting for the region’s most important decisions, as the General Assemblies of the Valley were held within its boundaries. This political significance attracted the nobility and, later, the intellectuals of the 20th century, transforming the village into a benchmark for Cabo de Armería architecture and a haven of peace and culture for distinguished visitors.
Elbete is a showcase of Baroque art and corners steeped in traditional symbolism.
Jarola Palace: Begun in the 17th century, this Cabo de Armería palace is one of the clearest examples of Navarrese Baroque. Its reddish ashlar façade displays a balance that reflects the prosperity of the area’s ancient lineages.
Askoa Palace: An example of a palace serving as an armoury that stands out for its classical elegance. Its façade is flanked by columns and crowned by a balcony bearing coats of arms. But beyond its aesthetics, Askoa is living history: next to the nearby bridge, the General Assembly of the Valley in Batzarre, the ancient self-governing body of the people of Baztanes, used to meet.
Church of Santa Cruz: The parish church houses the carving of the Archangel Saint Michael, a masterpiece of Romanesque sculpture in the valley, and the main altarpiece by Juan de Gazteluzar. Outside, the old washhouse and the disc-shaped stelae link the present with the customs and rites of those who came before them.
Traces of Valle-Inclán: The legacy of the writer Ramón del Valle-Inclán lingers in the fresh air and tranquillity of their homes. The surroundings of Elbete were the setting for his summer holidays, contributing a cultural memory that remains an integral part of the village’s heritage.
