Almandoz

The cradle of marble and a resting place for the traveller

At the southern end of the Baztan-Bidasoa Valley, red stone sets the tone for the façades and the character of the landscape. From the depths of these mountains sprang the marble that today adorns places as far afield as the Moscow Metro, weaving our geology into the history of the world. It is a place of passage and respite, where the Camino de Santiago intersects with architecture that reflects the daily care of those who live here.

Almandoz – General Information

Situated beneath the gaze of the port of Belate, Almandoz has shaped its identity through its natural resources. The marble quarries, still in operation, are the root of a way of life that has successfully transformed geological wealth into an unmistakable hallmark.

It was from here that the stones used to clad the Columbus Monument in Barcelona were taken, weaving our geology into the memory of other places. To live in Almandoz is to live alongside that heritage, in a setting where the streets and the details on the façades are the natural expression of the pride of belonging to this corner of Navarre.

What to see in Almandoz?

Almandoz reveals itself in the details of its façades and in the spirituality of its mountain trails.

  • Galtzaga Palace: This 18th-century palace, formerly a weapons store, dominates the town centre. Its carved stone structure, now integrated into village life as a guesthouse, allows one to observe the solidity of the old noble houses of Baztan without disrupting the town’s leisurely pace.
  • Casa Etxatoa and local craftsmanship: On this façade, the work of craftsman Fernando Aguerre shows how wood and stone interact. It is a vantage point for understanding the sensibility of those who continue to shape materials with their hands.
  • Santiago Chapel in Belate: Amidst the beech woods and the mist of Mount Belate, this small Romanesque building marks the way for pilgrims heading towards Pamplona. It is a place of silence that bears witness to the passing of the centuries and the footsteps of those who have crossed our mountains seeking refuge along the way.
  • Marble quarries: The influence of mineral extraction is evident in every corner. The veined limestone of Almandoz serves as a reminder that the landscape is, above all, living matter in use, a legacy that continues to define the atmosphere of this place.
