Royal Collegiate Church of Orreaga / Roncesvalles
Where the Way begins and history endures
Amidst the mist of the Pyrenees and the solidity of the stone, time unfolds at a different pace. In this border enclave, landscape and architecture engage in a dialogue with centuries of pilgrimage, whilst the echoes of the Camino de Santiago intertwine with the memory of ancient feats and spiritual traditions. The Royal Collegiate Church of Roncesvalles presents itself as a space where Atlantic nature and Gothic architecture take centre stage, shaping one of the most significant monumental complexes in the north of the Iberian Peninsula.
Royal Collegiate Church of Roncesvalles – general information
The Royal Collegiate Church of Roncesvalles is one of the most representative sites on the Way of St James at its entrance to the Iberian Peninsula. Situated in the Navarrese Pyrenees, it is the finest example of the Gothic style in Navarre, with direct influences from French Gothic architecture, particularly from the Île-de-France region.
Its origins date back to the 12th century, when King Alfonso I the Battler promoted the creation of a hospital for pilgrims at the nearby Alto de Ibañeta. Later, in the 13th century, Sancho VII the Strong commissioned the construction of the present complex and chose this site as his final resting place. Throughout its history, the complex has undergone various transformations, including Baroque alterations and reconstructions following fires. Today, it continues to serve as a cultural, religious and welcoming space, closely connected to the natural environment that surrounds it.
