Cultura
A community steeped in living history
Navarre is a region where culture is not limited to what is visible, but is also found in what is passed down and repeated over time. Through its landscapes, it is possible to explore different ways of understanding history, from monumental buildings to traditions that remain alive today.
You don’t need to look for grand gestures to understand it. Navarrese culture is evident in the architecture, in religious sites, in the fortresses that still mark the landscape, and in the museums that preserve the region’s memory. It is also felt in the language, in the celebrations, and in the customs that continue to shape everyday life.
What stands out in the culture of Navarre?
Navarre’s culture is expressed both in its monuments and in its customs and way of life.
- Monuments: The region preserves Roman-era remains such as the archaeological sites of Santa Criz de Eslava and Artzi. Traditional buildings also stand out, such as the granaries of the Aezkoa valley, old mills and historic bridges. In many rural areas, the farmhouse remains the centre of family life.
- Religious heritage : Buildings such as the Monastery of Leyre and the Collegiate Church of Roncesvalles play a key role in the history of the ancient kingdom and on the pilgrimage routes.
- Castles and fortresses : Castles such as those at Javier and Amaiur reflect important episodes in the history of Navarre. City walls, defensive towers and fortified houses are also preserved in various towns.
- Museums : There are venues dedicated to history, ethnography and traditions, such as the Almadía Museum.
- Living culture : Basque remains an active language in many areas and is an essential part of the cultural identity. Rural sports and traditional forms of Basque pelota, such as laxoa, are also notable.
- Cultural experiences : Throughout the year, events are held that revive trades and traditions, as well as pilgrimages and popular gatherings. There is also a growing presence of Navarre in the literary and audiovisual spheres.
