Izalzu / Itzaltzu

Between the valley’s twilight and the memory sung

In a fold of the Pyrenees where the light gathers and the forest grows deeper, the stone holds a story woven from ancient voices and lingering silences. In Izalzu, winter leaves a white trail that seems to erase time, whilst legend seeps through the houses and paths, as if it had never ceased to inhabit the place. It is a territory of serene mystery, where the murmur of the Anduña and the memory of Gartxot coexist in harmony under the tranquil presence of Abodi.

Izalzu general information

The village lies at an altitude of 803 metres, in the upper reaches of the Valle de Salazar , as one of those places where time seems to have gently stood still. Its identity dates back to its links with the Monastery of Leyre, which as early as the 11th century recorded this settlement under the name of Isisuloa, thus providing one of the earliest written accounts of its existence. For centuries, life was tied to the rhythms of monastic life until, in the Modern Age, the village acquired the status of a town within the valley community. Today, in the mixed zone, it retains an unspoilt essence: a way of life linked to livestock, the forest and a respectful relationship with the surroundings of Irati , far from any rush.

What to see in Izalzu?

The village offers a tour where architecture, nature and oral history intertwine.

  • Church of the Assumption: A Gothic stone building that dominates the hamlet and has been the spiritual heart of the village since the 16th century.
  • Izalzu Bridge: A medieval structure spanning the river, offering a haven of absolute peace and a visual testament to traditional engineering.
  • Chapel of San José: A simple structure, it is identified by historical records as the possible site of the former medieval monastery.
  • Pyrenean Architecture: The village consists of detached, coat-of-arms-adorned houses with steeply pitched roofs designed to cope with heavy snowfall.
  • Gartxot Trail: The town’s star trail, a circular route of around 11 km that winds through beech forests and past waterfalls until reaching the Elkorreta cave, where legend has it the medieval bard was imprisoned.
