Where the valley folds between mountains and the streams rush down towards the border of Lower Navarre, the land bears the constant trace of those who cross the threshold of the Camino . In Valcarlos, the atmosphere is felt in the depths of the beech forests and in the ancient rhythm of the dantzaris, whose dance keeps the memory of the place alive. It is a borderland, where the echoes of ancient deeds and the daily life of its neighbourhoods intertwine in a silent harmony that reveals itself unhurriedly, allowing the mountains and history to express themselves in every gesture.

What to see in Valcarlos?

The town as a whole offers a chance to discover a region where epic memory, spirituality and mountain life manifest themselves naturally in every corner.

  • Church of St James the Apostle: Located in the Elizaldea neighbourhood, it was rebuilt between the 18th and 19th centuries after being destroyed in the War of the Convention. Inside, it houses a remarkable 16th-century silver processional cross.
  • Irauzketa: This building stands opposite the church and is considered the oldest in the town (dating from around 1100); a pilgrims’ hospital once operated from here.
  • Monument to the Pilgrim: Located in the centre of the village, it pays tribute to those who walk the ‘Way of Europe’.
  • The neighbourhoods: The municipality comprises scattered settlements such as Elizaldea (administrative centre), Pekotxeta (shopping and commercial area) and Gainekoleta, the livestock-farming neighbourhood where artisanal cheese is produced.
  • "778 The Battle of Roncesvalles" Exhibition Centre: A space dedicated to the region’s historical heritage, the Roman road and the mysticism of the legend of Roland.
  • Natural surroundings: The terrain offers a landscape of ravines and dense forests of beech, oak and chestnut trees, inviting visitors to observe nature in its purest form.
