Elgorriaga

The spring of health at the foot of Mount Mendaur

Sheltered by the imposing slopes of the Mendaur and Askin mountains, Elgorriaga is a haven of peace where water takes centre stage. In this corner of Malerreka, the mineral springs preserve a geological record unique in Europe, where the stonework of the houses and the arch of the medieval bridge coexist with the course of the River Ezkurra. Time passes here amidst the traces of tradition and the route of the Water Trail, integrating the natural environment of Baztan-Bidasoa into daily life without the need for interpretative devices.

Elgorriaga general information

The Elgorriaga area, whose name refers to the red hawthorn, borders Sunbilla, Doneztebe/Santesteban and Ituren. The history of the municipality is linked to the use of its medicinal waters, which since the early 20th century have shaped the character of a village where traditional architecture blends with the use of its springs. Far from being merely a backdrop, the current spa maintains the vitality of a tradition rooted in the subsoil of the Baztan-Bidasoa region, showcasing the evolution of a culture linked to mineral health.
