Oieregi

The gateway to the paradise of Bértiz

Oieregi is the threshold where the tarmac gives way to the deepest green of Navarre. Strategically situated on the banks of the River Bidasoa, this village serves as an elegant transition between the Etxalar border and the Baztan-Bidasoa Valley. Oieregi is synonymous with stately heritage and conservation, acting as the guardian of a natural treasure: the Señorío de Bértiz Natural Park. Walking through its streets and across its bridges is to feel the legacy of those who loved this landscape, combining the sturdiness of its palaces with the delicacy of its historic gardens.

Oieregi general information

Our territory covers 22.88 km², acting as the link that marks the start of the Baztan Valley and connects with the villages of Narbarte, Legasa and Etxalar. The history of Oieregi is linked to its historical significance as a crossroads, a role that lives on today in the presence of the Tourist Office and in the memory of Pedro Ciga and Dorotea Fernández. Living here means observing an ecosystem that has managed to retain its essence over the centuries, where heritage management and daily life are rooted in the green of the forest.

What to see in Oieregi?

Oieregi offers a unique combination of historical engineering, Gothic architecture and exceptional biodiversity.

  • Señorío de Bértiz Natural Park: This 2,040-hectare area is a key record of the beech and oak forests in the region. The historic-artistic garden is home to 126 exotic species that coexist with the Bértiz Palace and a Modernist-style chapel. The presence of these elements demonstrates the coexistence of human intervention and the botanical development of Baztan-Bidasoa.
  • Reparacea Bridge: Declared a Site of Cultural Interest, this structure stands out for its single semicircular arch spanning the Bidasoa riverbed. Its masonry, restored in the 1990s, links the family palace with the entrance to the forest, integrating the engineering into the river landscape with a simplicity that dispenses with unnecessary ornamentation.
  • Reparacea Palace: Situated on the riverbank, this building of medieval origin features a late 18th-century reconstruction defined by its two square towers. Its three-storey structure exemplifies the solidity of civil architecture in Bertizarana, now protected as a landmark of the region’s noble heritage.
  • Church of St John the Baptist: Our Gothic-style parish church stands out for its architectural harmony. With its hipped roof and the use of the characteristic reddish ashlar stone typical of the area around Baztan , it combines plastered walls with exposed stone, creating a visual contrast that is very typical of the region
