Oieregi

Strategically situated between the Malerreka Valley and the Baztan Valley, Bertizarana is a region where nature expresses itself with an almost mystical exuberance. It is here that the River Baztan officially becomes the River Bidasoa, its waters lapping the shores of the three villages that make up this municipality: Legasa, Narbarte and Oieregi.

Known for being home to the Señorío de Bértiz Natural Park, this small valley is a sanctuary of biodiversity, where the centuries-old beech forests and the best-preserved oak groves in Navarre form an endless green tapestry that offers the peace of deep forests.

Which villages are there in the Bertizarana Valley?

Each of the villages in Bertizarana has its own distinct character, shaped by its proximity to the river and the forest.

Narbarte

It is the administrative capital of the valley and a perfect example of traditional architecture. A stroll through its streets allows you to admire large farmhouses with stone facades and wooden balconies. Its church of San Andrés and its proximity to the river make it a lively little town.

Legasa

Set amidst meadows and rolling hills, Legasa stands out for its tranquillity and its layout typical of the Cantabrian region of Navarre. Its sturdy yet elegant houses cluster around the parish church of Santa Ana. It is a place where you can see how farming and livestock rearing have shaped the landscape without disrupting the harmony of the surroundings.

Oieregi

Oieregi serves as the gateway to the Señorío de Bértiz. This municipality combines the beauty of its stone palaces with the lush greenery of its botanical gardens. It is the place where stately architecture meets the wild forest, offering an unrivalled visual experience where the waters of the Bidasoa are ever-present.

The Señorío de Bértiz Natural Park

This 2,040-hectare area, declared a natural park in 1984, remains a fundamental record of the region’s forest heritage. Its current appearance preserves the vision of its former owners, who chose to conserve a territory that today reveals itself through its own botanical maturity.

  • Natural forests: The presence of oak groves in the valley floor and centuries-old beech forests marks a botanical uniqueness within the geography of Navarre. The forest is in a state of conservation that allows one to sense the natural cycles of the Pyrenees, where humidity and shade dictate the character of the environment.
  • The historic garden: In the Oieregi area, the botanical garden brings together species from various origins, integrated into a layout of fountains and footpaths. This space evokes an atmospheric setting where exotic vegetation coexists with native species, without losing the connection to the mysticism that surrounds the valley.
  • The palace and the chapel: Buildings that add a touch of distinction and Baroque elegance to the vast natural landscape of Bertizarana.
