Peña Izaga

The mineral silence of the Pre-Pyrenean valleys

Peña Izaga rises above the Izagaondoa valleys as a broad and serene mountain, where the landscape seems to stretch slowly towards the horizon. Its silhouette dominates the surroundings without abruptness, complementing the landscape of forests, ravines and small hamlets that still retain the unhurried rhythm of the Navarran Pre-Pyrenees.

The slopes change character depending on their aspect. On the north-facing side, the dampness favours the growth of beech, boxwood and moss, whilst the more open areas present a brighter, more rocky landscape. The mountain retains a sense of balance between nature and human presence, evident in the ancient paths, pastures and chapels that still form part of valley life.

Peña Izaga general information

Peña Izaga (1,361 m), also known as Itzaga, is one of the most prominent peaks in the Navarrese Pre-Pyrenees due to its prominence and visual isolation above the nearby valleys. Its relief marks the natural transition between central Navarre and the first Pyrenean mountains.

Near the summit stands the Romanesque chapel of San Miguel de Izaga, linked for centuries to the traditional pilgrimages of the valley’s villages. The mountain also boasts significant scenic and ecological richness thanks to the variety of environments found on its northern and southern slopes.

How to get to Peña Izaga?

The ascent to Peña Izaga begins in the small villages of the Izagaondoa Valley.

  • The main access point is from Ardanaz de Izagaondoa.
