Tradition and sport in Navarre’s squares

Laxoa is one of Navarre’s oldest sporting traditions and one of the original forms of Basque pelota. Its practice remains particularly linked to the squares of Baztan and Malerreka, where the sound of the ball and leather still forms part of the everyday atmosphere during matches and celebrations. Through the generations, this game has retained its popular character and its connection to village life, preserving a way of understanding sport that is closely linked to tradition and community.

What is Laxoa?

Laxoa is considered the oldest form of Basque pelota and one of the traditional forms of the so-called ‘long game’. It is played with leather gloves and requires large, open spaces, a feature that still defines many towns in Baztan and Malerreka.

Its origins are linked to ancient games played by shepherds in spaces known as pilotasoro or soropil. Over time, Laxoa became part of the social life of numerous villages in Navarre and developed into a deeply rooted tradition in the area.

Today, towns such as Arraioz, Oitz, Irurita or Doneztebe keep this sport alive through matches, schools and competitions that help preserve one of Navarre’s great sporting and cultural heritages.
