Foz de Arbaiun

Foz of Arbaiun

The heartbeat of Navarre’s great canyon

Here, where the rock rises in a vertical wall reaching almost four hundred metres and the River Salazar carves its history into the folds of the Sierra de Leyre , time dissolves into the depths of the landscape. The Arbayun Gorge is home to the echo of the flight of griffon vultures and the unbroken silence of a land that has remained untouched by the hurried passage of the centuries. It is a place of abyss and contemplation, where the force of the earth and the life of the air engage in a balanced dialogue, slowly revealing the essence of the so-called ‘queen of the gorges’.

Arbayun Gorge general information

It is recognised as the longest and most imposing gorge in Navarre, forming a deep canyon 6 kilometres long that marks the transition between the Pre-Pyrenean basin and the Pyrenees. Its character is defined by a limestone landscape sculpted by water, with drops reaching 300 to 400 metres at its steepest points.

Designated a Nature Reserve (RN-16) and a Special Protection Area for Birds, its rocky terrain provides a refuge for unique biodiversity. Its crevices are home to the largest colony of griffon vultures in Navarre, alongside unique species such as the golden eagle, the Egyptian vulture and the bearded vulture. Its vegetation forms a melting pot ranging from the holm oak and Mediterranean gall oak to the damp ash and beech trees in the shadiest areas.

What to do at the Arbayun Gorge?

Here, a landscape unfolds where verticality and flight tell the same story.

  • View from the Iso Viewpoint: A strategic spot to take in the true scale of the gorge from a platform jutting out over the precipice. It is a vantage point par excellence where the flight of the vultures takes place right beneath the observer’s feet.
  • Hiking route to the “Balcón”: A 4.8-kilometre (round trip) linear route starting from Alto de Iso. The path winds through boxwood forests and offers unbeatable views of the rock faces over a journey of approximately 2 hours.
  • Exploration of the interior (Canaleta): A route for the most intrepid observer, allowing you to explore the depths of the canyon via a trail that starts in the village of Usún.
  • Birding: A prime location for observing, at a leisurely pace, the behaviour of large birds of prey in their natural habitat.
  • Memories of the log drivers: Its landscape preserves the stories of the men who floated timber down the River Salazar, a reminder of a life tied to the power of water.
