Valle pirenaico de Arce con casas entre bosques de hayas en primavera temprana.

Arce / Artzi

Where history becomes stone

Here, the silence of the stone holds the secrets that shaped the valley. On the banks of the River Urrobi, the blocks of Romanesque ashlar and the traces of the Roman road mark a timeline suspended between the mist and the memory of ancient lineages. It is a place where the solidity of the masonry at Santa María and the tranquil expanse of the archaeological site reveal a mineral persistence, linking the history of the route through the Pirineo d’ with the stillness of a deserted village that slowly unfolds before attentive eyes.

Arce / Artzi general information

This spot stands at an altitude of 589 metres, a haven of calm where time seems to dissolve amongst the stones. Arce, at the foot of the valley that bears its name, was from the 11th century onwards a manor of prominent nobility in the Kingdom of Navarre. Its strategic location alongside the road linking Zaragoza with Bordeaux meant that the legacy of its lineages and the memory of passing travellers became etched into its character, now part of the Merindad de Sangüesa.

What to see in Arce / Artzi?

In Arce, history can be felt in every wall, every trace of a path and every shadow in the valley.

  • Church of Santa María de Arce: This Romanesque building exemplifies the solidity of 12th-century art. Its ashlar masonry architecture reflects the spiritual sobriety that has characterised these lands, standing as a fundamental stone landmark in the valley landscape.
  • Arce Palace: It is recognised as a former palace of the Chief Armourer, which belonged to one of the most important family dynasties in the Kingdom. Its walls are a physical record of the rural nobility and the feudal power that once controlled the territory.
  • Artzi Archaeological Site: Nearby, the landscape bears the traces of a Roman-era settlement linked to the Iter XXXIV road. Research indicates the existence of a waystation or ‘inn’ for rest and control of the route, where Roman ashlar coexists with the memory of the ancient Basque settlers.
