Where history becomes stone
Where history becomes stone
Here, the silence of the stone holds the secrets that shaped the valley. On the banks of the River Urrobi, the blocks of Romanesque ashlar and the traces of the Roman road mark a timeline suspended between the mist and the memory of ancient lineages. It is a place where the solidity of the masonry at Santa María and the tranquil expanse of the archaeological site reveal a mineral persistence, linking the history of the route through the Pirineo d’ with the stillness of a deserted village that slowly unfolds before attentive eyes.
This spot stands at an altitude of 589 metres, a haven of calm where time seems to dissolve amongst the stones. Arce, at the foot of the valley that bears its name, was from the 11th century onwards a manor of prominent nobility in the Kingdom of Navarre. Its strategic location alongside the road linking Zaragoza with Bordeaux meant that the legacy of its lineages and the memory of passing travellers became etched into its character, now part of the Merindad de Sangüesa.
In Arce, history can be felt in every wall, every trace of a path and every shadow in the valley.
